Crocs Clog Blindness
The Problem:
Crocs have a unique problem. While their business trends up, their shoes actually last too long, as their rubber material means they last for years. This creates a stagnant purchase cycle where a customer buys one pair of classic clogs and doesn't feel the need to return until they wear them into the ground. At the same time, trendier competitors like Birkenstock move in on the "cool" factor. If Crocs can’t find a way to sustain their success, they risk falling back into the “ugly” shoe category.
The Truth:
Gen Z and Millennials love Crocs for comfort, but they suffer from "Clog Blindness." To most consumers, the classic clog is the only Crocs product that exists. Since younger audiences, especially Gen Z, are reactive consumers, they rarely go out of their way to discover a product. Instead, they wait for products to find them through algorithms and peer recommendations.
The Approach:
So, how do we get Croc owners to buy just one more pair of Crocs? Simple: we stop selling a shoe and start selling a canvas. Our strategy focuses on reshaping the consumer journey from a linear "need-based" purchase into a self-sustaining cycle of creativity and novelty. We move the focus away from the standard retail experience and toward the Crocs Customization Suite.
To disrupt the typical discovery process, where a simple Google search usually leads a customer back to the same clogs they already own, we partner with lifestyle and fashion influencers to launch the #MyCroc campaign. These creators showcase themselves unboxing a completely custom pair of Crocs, leveraging the near-endless possibilities of the Croc Creation Suite. This shifts the trigger for consumers from "I need new shoes" to "I want my version of this shoe."
By gamifying the shopping process, we give the power back to the consumer. The goal is to make the decision-making process personal and empowering, ensuring that no two pairs of #MyCrocs look the same. Naturally, this feeds into the "sharing" phase of the consumer journey. In a world of black, white, and camo clogs, a custom pair is a conversation starter.
We track the success of this strategy not just through traditional sales, but through specific traffic to the customization suite and the social reach of the #MyCroc tag. This effectively turns a one-time purchase into a loop, leveraging endless designs and social proof.
